Dr Sandeep Arunothayaraj
MBBS (Hons), BMedSci, FRACP
Consultant Cardiologist
Dr Sandeep Arunothayaraj undertook his medical degree at the University of Melbourne on a full
academic National Medicine Scholarship. This followed an exceptional performance in VCE, where
he was awarded the Australian Students Prize for Excellence with an ENTER of 99.95 and perfect
study scores of 50/50 in all subjects. Sandeep continued his academic success through university,
winning both the 2009 Geoffrey Royal and the 2010 Evelyn Coy Prizes in clinical surgery. He
graduated as equal first rank in his MBBS cohort of 307 students and was listed on the Dean’s
Honours List in every eligible semester.
Sandeep completed his basic physician and advanced cardiology training at St Vincent’s Hospital in
Melbourne, earning his Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2018. He
continued at St Vincent’s for a further 2 years as the Interventional Cardiology Fellow, training in the
implantation of stents and heart valves with Professor Robert Whitbourn. In 2021 Sandeep moved to
Brighton in the United Kingdom for a combined clinical and research fellowship focused on
Structural Cardiology. Whilst concurrently undertaking a Doctorate of Medical Science through the
University of Melbourne, he spent 2.5 years training with the previous lead for Structural Cardiology
in the UK, and current President of the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society, Professor David
Hildick-Smith. In England he gained extensive experience in all aspects of contemporary structural
heart interventions, participating in multiple first-in-man device implantations and authoring
numerous publications on TAVI and coronary intervention. He also presented on these topics at
conferences across Europe.
Following this Sandeep moved to Dublin to spend 6-months training with Dr Colm Hanratty in
complex coronary intervention and chronic total occlusion revascularisation. Dr Hanratty is an
internationally renowned expert in the field and mentored Sandeep in the latest PCI techniques,
including use of intracoronary imaging, intravascular lithotripsy and drug coated balloons. Sandeep
aims to use these advancements to achieve optimal long-term results for his patients.
Sandeep returns to Australia having performed over 300 heart valve implantations and close to 1000
coronary stenting procedures. His fellowships have provided him with a network of global expertise
and the ability to combine the best of both Australian and European cardiology. Sandeep’s skills,
combined with his attentive and respectful manner, have earned him an excellent reputation
amongst both colleagues and patients at all the centres he has worked at. He looks forward to
providing the best possible care for his patients in Australia.
